Mounting and Framing

Mounting vs. Framing

BrightBits offers both mounting and framing services.

Mounting involves adhering a photo or document to a background, and optionally adding decorative elements.

Framing involves, as you would expect, putting the photo or document into a frame, with or without a mat. Mats can be cut in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.

Why Mount Photos and Documents?

There are two main reasons for mounting photos and documents:

older items, especially those that are starting to deteriorate, will benefit from protective mounting

display of photos or documents can be greatly enhanced with decorative mounting

Bright Bits mounting services offer many options for enhancing the appearance and lifetime of your photos and memorabilia.

Mounting Old or Damaged Photos

Get those old photos out of the shoebox and into albums! There are many fine archive-quality albums and mounting supplies available from your local photo shop, craft store, or specialty scrapbooking shop. Excellent scrapbooking supplies are also available from in-home direct sellers (although I'm not allowed to mention names).

Always look for acid- and lignin-free papers, and acid-free adhesives.

You can adhere your photos directly to the album page, or use photo mounting corners (little triangular thingies that you tuck the corners of your picture into). Photo mounting corners are great for postcards, or photos with writing on the back - you can remove the item and replace it easily.

Some old photos may be too damaged to work with mounting corners. If you want to be able to see both sides of the item, I recommend a polypropylene sleeve. The item is tucked into the sleeve, and the sleeve attached to the album page along one side with double-sided tape. The sleeve can also be sealed with double-sided tape.

If the item is very fragile, and the back is of no concern, then it is best to adhere it to a backing paper. Bright Bits uses an acid-free, photo-safe spray adhesive, and archive quality mounting papers. The item is sprayed with the adhesive, then attached to the mounting paper. It can then be added to an album with adhesive or mounting corners, or placed in a protective sleeve.

Remember that you can always scan both sides of the item before, or instead of, mounting, and get high-resolution, archive quality prints made.

Decorative Mounting

Artistically mounted photos or other memorabilia make excellent gifts for any occasion. BrightBits offers a wide variety of options for custom mounting of your treasured items. Many different colours of mounting paper are available. Decorative elements can be added with paper punches, stencils, and other techniques. Photos can be cropped using various template shapes to add interest.

Pre-made BrightBits photo mounts are an easy and inexpensive way to add pizzazz to your photos. BrightBits offers two basic styles of photos mounts:

Picture-In-Back: the picture is attached to the back of the photo mount, similar to a regular mat.

Picture-In-Front: the picture is attached to the front of the photo mount. Pictures can be cropped to any size or shape. More than one picture can be mounted for a collage effect.

Matting and Framing

BrightBits can frame your photo in a frame of your choosing. BrightBits makes custom aluminium frames using Decor mouldings. In addition to standard rectangular frames, you can get frames with 3, 5, 6, 8, 10 or 12 sides. If you don't like aluminium frames, BrightBits can arrange to have a wood frame custom made, or select an off-the-shelf frame to suit your taste.

Framed items can be matted as well. Only acid-free mat board is used. Mat board comes in a wide variety of colours. BrightBits will custom cut the mat to suit the item and frame. Rectangular, circular and oval mat openings are available, as well as free-hand shapes.

Although your photo or document can be placed in any frame of your choosing, the following recommendations will ensure that your treasured portraits and memorabilia will last for generations:

Items should be framed under glass to protect them from UV, dust, moisture, etc.

The item should NOT touch the glass. This promotes mildew, and can cause the item to stick to the glass. If a mat is not desired, then mat strips should be attached to the glass under the rabbet, to provide a space between the item and the glass.

Metal frames provide the best longevity, as wooden frames can deteriorate over time.
