Mosaics can be made from any picture. They make excellent background images. Here is a mosaic of my father's World War II medals:
I started with individual scanned images of each medal (five in total). I melded the images into a single tile, faded the colours, then created the mosaic. I used this as a background for a scrapbook page like this:
